$5 Album Round-up – March
Well it’s only been a few days since my last $5 Amazon round-up but I was really late getting that posted, so I wanted to be on-time for this one. In case you don’t know every month Amazon releases 100 albums for $5 a piece. It’s a pretty good deal and sometimes you can find some really good albums for a few singles. So instead of hitting the strip joint, save your singles and buy some music.
Below the post is broken down into 4 categories: No Brainers, If I Have Extra Cash, Best Covers and The Wackness. Of course these are just my opinions so take them or leave them, no worries. Better yet, comment with what you think are the stand-out albums listed this month. Don’t hate; debate.
No Brainers
Pharcyde – Labcabincalifornia
This is an absolute, no brainer, must have. I own this on vinyl, special colored vinyl, cd and in digital format. Pharcyde was one of the best hip-hop groups from the mid-90’s. If you don’t have this album, do yourself a favor and buy it now.
Purchase
Phoenix – It’s Never Been Like That
Phoenix has been one of my favorite groups at the moment. This is an older release but a solid release nonetheless.
Purchase
El-P – I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead
El-P is a top-notch hip-hop producer/emcee on the indie label Definitive Jux. If you listen to hip-hop you have probably heard him or his production without even knowing it. Definitely worth 5 dollars. Give it a listen.
Purchase
The Shins – Chutes Too Narrow
This album came out on my wife’s birthday, so you know it has to be good. The Shins have never really release anything that I wouldn’t buy. To me The Shins have one of the best sounds around.
Purchase
If I Have Extra Cash
Breakestra – Dusk Till’ Dawn
A fantastic old school funk band. If you just want to sit down and relax and listen to some good tunes, this is the group for you. Anyone who likes funk music, you will not be disappointed.
Purchase
Lenny Kravitz – Are You Gonna Go My Way
This is probably Lenny Kravitz’s most well-known album with his probably most well-known song. If you don’t already have this album, it’s a good one to add to your collection.
Purchase
Radiohead – Kid A (Collector’s Edition)
I am not a huge Radiohead fan like most folks are. I just never really got into them. I think they are a good group but for me, just a nice-to-have. This is a two disc-esque (digital) edition. Can’t beat that 5 bucks.
Purchase
Best Covers
Various – Finian’s Rainbow
Pretty neat, that’s right neat, cover. Colorful, cut-off’ish. Grabs my attention, thankfully the cover does because I would never look at a Broadway recording otherwise.
Purchase
Dead Kennedys – Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death
Who doesn’t like just mass chaos on an album cover? I really don’t even know what’s going on there, but who cares, it kicks ass. Kind of punk, kind of corny, but kick ass nonetheless.
Purchase
The Ruby Suns – Sea Lion
One of the oddest covers I have seen in a while but I love the colors and elementary coloring book cover. I have no idea what the hell is going on but, this one I am buying just because of the cover. Why not?
Purchase
The Wackness
Lil’ Wayne – Rebirth
I may take some heat for this, or even get smoked, but Lil’ Wayne is wiggity-wack! Any hip-hop/rap artist that has ‘lil’ in their name, just keep moving along. Sooner or later they have to get bigger and grow up right? Er um, maybe not.
DON’T Purchase
Eddy-K – Asalto
I made this call strictly on album cover. Wow, why even release an album if you do the Photoshop yourself. The music itself isn’t for me, dance/latin music.
DON’T Purchase
Rascal Flatts – Greatest Hits Volume 1
The only music genre I really don’t care for, Country. Honestly though, I didn’t even know they had enough hits for a ‘Greatest Hits’, yet alone a Volume 1; hinting there is or will be a Volume 2.
DON’T Purchase
Well that rounds it out. Hopefully there is something there you are interested in. Any comments, questions, debates, please leave them below. Until April, enjoy.

Somehow I didn’t own “Give Me Convenience”… just corrected that! I still think “Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables” is a stronger album, but you can’t beat Holiday in Cambodia or Police Truck for all out rage.
To be honest, I have nothing from Dead Kennedys, just started with this album today. Have to give it a good listen tomorrow. I need something new to run to.
