fun. - Aim and Ignite - Album Cover

How do you define it? Well for me it’s a band, a really good band and for lack of a better word, fun. Some pun intended I guess.

Since there is so much music out there, it’s hard to stay up-to-date on all bands, genres, tours, launches, etc; So what I like to do about once or twice a month is purchase a new album without listening to it based on the album artwork. Silly I know, but why not? I like graphic design so I thought: ‘This cover looks interesting, their music probably is as well.’.

So the album cover to the right is why I chose this particular band. It was fun, unique and to be quite honest, didn’t make much sense to me. It appears to me that a boy scout or young private is taking aim to shoot at something and a peacock strangely lands on his rifle, mocking him. Like ‘You can’t shoot me, just stick to playing that bugle son.’ After a good laugh between the two, the peacock flies away and the boy lowers his gun and chooses to pick flowers instead. Okay so that is really far-fetched and I totally made that up, but it could happen. Maybe.

What do you think about the album cover? Does it tell a story? Does it make nice use of muted primary colors?

What About the Music?

Okay so the cover is what intrigued me to buy the album a few months ago, but what about the music? How is it? To be quite honest….it pretty much kills. The group is fantastic; upbeat, original and again for the lack of a better word: fun.

Freddie Mercury

Freddie Mercury

In some songs the lead singer sounds like Freddie Mercury from Queen, in others he sounds soulful and very much original. All-in-all his voice is his voice and he isn’t trying to be anyone else. He can just hit a wide variety of ranges and it’s fantastic to hear.

fun. launched their debut album ‘Aim and Ignite’ on August 25th, 2009 on the label: Nettwerk. It is a ten track album (12 if purchased on iTunes – two bonus tracks). I truthfully cannot say that I dislike any song on the album. There are definite stand-out songs on this album for me though.

‘The Gambler’ is by far my favorite. Soulful, heartfelt and to be honest was a perfect song for my wife and I.  ‘Walking the Dog’ and ‘Barlights’ round out the top three for me.

‘Walking the Dog’ is just fun and upbeat. I love to drive to it, run to it and just an overall song that can motivate me. ‘Barlights’ has pretty much the same appeal to me as ‘Walking the Dog’, just not as ‘fun’ for me.

Final word from me is to spend the seven dollars and purchase this album. I can’t say you will be disappointed if you like good music. Forgive me for that, ‘Good Music’ is very much subjective. If you would like to purchase what I think is good music, I would recommend picking up this album. The album to me is genius (along with calling their group fun.) and additive. This was the only album I listened to after I bought it for a few weeks.
